REPORTED SPEECH
A reported speech, otherwise known as indirect speech, is the opposite of direct speech. It means a report made in the repoter's own words rather than the exact words of the original speaker.
Rules for reported speech
1.) Simple present tense changes to simple past tense. e.g
> They are on their way changes to
* He/She said that they WERE on their way.
> Junior likes cheese balls changes to
* He/ she said that Junior liked cheese balls.
2.) The pronoun I changes to "HE or SHE. e.g
> I baked the bread changes to
* She/He said that he BAKED the bread.
> I don't know where it changes to
* She/He said he DIDN'T know where it WAS.
3.) We changes to they and 'us' changes to 'them'. e.g
> We will certainly visit Grandma changes to "They said that THEY WOULD certainly visit Grandma.
4.) Tomorrow changes to the following day while yesterday changes to ''he day before". e.g
> I will can't go there tomorrow changes to ''She/He said that SHE/HE COULDN'T go there THE FOLLOWING DAY.
ASSIGNMENT
Change the following sentences to reported speech.
1.) Zynab told us "I'm going to dinner tonight."
2.) I promise to bake chocolate cake for you tomorrow.
3.) Opa and Amina said "We like the new teacher."
4.) Theodore said "I swept the compound alone."
5.) Jumaima said to us "I can't go to Jimmy's birthday party."
